Collection: The horsefly trap highly effective against biting horseflies & deerflies!

The horsefly trap ( basics)

Operation of a horsefly trap

There are several ways to fight horseflies with traditional horsefly traps and glue traps, but also flysprays will help. There is also a new system of horsefly trap with glue and a black bucket, called the Sticky Trap horsefly glue trap. It is important to catch horseflies because horses, people and other livestock can be troubled by it. The horsefly trap prevents severe pain from the horsefly bite and there is also a chance with a bite that a bacterial infection will develop and will then have to be helped with antibiotics.

Horseflies & deer-flies also cause great stress by humans and animals.

Operation of a horsefly trap (Video)

The horsefly trap lures the horseflies away from humans or animals. The female horsefly and deerflies bite and drink blood because of the rich protein content and uses the blood to lay her eggs. The horsefly hunts only in warm and sunny weather and thereby scan for the environment.

The beautiful weather increases your body heat and makes you more visible. The biting horsefly, flies around and scans the entire environment for heat and movement. (Infrared) (because something that is warm & moving contains blood), this works very differently than a wasp that relies on sweet smells.

The H-Trap horsefly trap and glue trap respond exactly to this. The traps are provided with a ball, bucket or other black object. The ball of the horsefly trap is black and gets even warmer than you, your horse or your livestock, so the hunting horsefly thinks that the ball of the horsefly trap is a prey to bite into. The horse flies towards the trap and will land on the ball or bucket. After landing, the horsefly will fly away disappointed, but the horse can only fly up. The fly will be caught via the funnel and the H-trap entrance of the collection container. The horsefly will overheat and die. Some people choose to put soapy water in the receptacle to speed up this process.

Types of horsefly traps

Loer horsefly trap
Horsefly trap with flytrap glue

There are different types of horsefly traps available in our store. Most are based on the same system as described above. In this horsefly trap, an H-trap is used in addition to the horsefly ball. Such a type of horsefly trap is called an H-trap horsefly trap and is produced by some brands which you can buy below the shop.

The original flytrap is called the Loer Horsefly trap and has been there since 2008. There is also the Kerbl Taon X horseflytrap and the Traps from Alcochem. Nowadays there is more often chosen for a horsefly glue trap in which is usually chosen for a large black ball or black plastic bucket. The horsefly will then go on the ball just like with a normal horsefly trap because he thinks that this is a prey because the ball is hanging, slightly moved by the wind and in this way it will attract horseflies.

The Sticky Trap horsefly glue is on the ball or bucket and once they are trying to bite the ball they are stuck by the adhesive. Watch out! Mouse glue is sometimes used in for this and is very dangerous to children and birds! The Sticky Trap original horsefly trap glue can be found below in the overview of horsefly traps.

This is a very effective way to catch horseflies. Research has shown that on real “horsefly days” several hundred horseflies can be caught in the trap. The horsefly trap should be placed in a visible, open, sunny place. In combination with a fly blanket, this is a very good way to protect your horses from horseflies.

The horseflies attack the black sun-warmed ball or bucket because it resembles an animal's buttocks. This allows you to reduce the horsefly population from 90% to 95% to an even lower number.

It is an environmentally friendly way to catch horseflies. One fall is enough for about 1 hectare.

The horsefly trap:

  • Tackles the nuisance of horseflies directly and effectively.
  • Has a 100% natural working without insecticides.
  • Works without electricity.
  • Is easy to install.
  • Is maintenance and user friendly
Where to place a horsefly trap ?

The horsefly trap can be used in different places, but of course it must be placed in the place where the nuisance is most. This can of course be at the riding arena, at the edge of the pool, but also around the football fields, natural water and campsites.

A horsefly trap works up to a maximum of 10,000 square meters, but we must remember that a horse flies never stays in full sun for more than 10 minutes. The horsefly trap should therefore preferably also be placed in a location near vegetation. (bushes, cornfield trees, etc.) it is also important that the horsefly catches as many hours of sun as possible, so place it somewhere on the south.

  •  Agricultural destination (Riding schools, stables, horse boarding houses, pastures)
  • Public areas Campsites outside swimming pools, natural water events
  • Sports fields (soccer fields golf courses hockey clubs etc) and all other places where nuisance occurs.

Sinds 2018 there are several improvements in the horsefly traps and horsefly glue. You can think of thicker tubes to support the weight of the horsefly ball. The fabric is now also UV resistant for all brands. There is also a new type of horsefly glue on the market which is very effective in catching horseflies and replaces the old glue. You can buy these and other horsefly traps easily and for the best price in our shop.

your horses and livestock are grateful to you!
